Youth Team Education
We are proud to deliver the education framework as part of the NTFC U18 Youth Team apprenticeship. All scholars currently complete 3 or 4 elements that make up the education element of their time as a youth team scholar, dependent on GCSE grades achieved in year 11:
- 1 and a half days a week is spent studying for and completing a Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma in Sport (the equivalent of 2 or 3 A Levels), delivered by our Academy Education Lead, Pete Stephenson, and Academy Tutor, Liz Bennett. The qualification can allow boys to go on to higher education at any point whether they make it in the professional game or not.
- Pete also delivers and assesses the NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Achieving Excellence in Sport, which gives the boys a chance to evidence what they are learning as young footballers.
- Any boys that don’t achieve a GCSE grade 4 at Maths and/or English get support to complete a Level 2 Functional Skills qualification during their time as a scholar.
- The boys also complete a Level 2 Coaching qualification, delivered by the Professional Footballers Association (PFA), which can allow them to embark on a coaching career in the future when their professional playing career is over
The education framework is delivered in partnership with League Football Education (LFE) and Innoved/Wigan Warriors Education. As part of their education during their 2 year scholarship, we also run a life skills programme, including several sessions during the season delivered by guest speakers provided by the LFE, covering topics such as social media, mental health and well-being and preventing addiction. We also run sessions internally to help develop the boys for life inside and outside of the professional game.
